Administrators

Educational Origami

This blog and wiki is about 21st Century Learning and 21st Century Teaching. This is not just about the integration of technology into the classroom, though this is certainly a critical area. It is about shifting the entire paradigm of education. Be sure to check out the sidebar for resources.

George Lucas Educational Foundation: Edutopia

Empowering and connecting teachers, administrators, and parents with innovative solutions and resources to better education. Includes an extensive library of video examples. See their core strategies of Project-Based Learning and Technology Integration.

Google Apps for Education

Google Apps' advanced collaboration and communication tools make it easy to help your students acquire the skills that will help them in their education and out in the world. There's no hardware to maintain or software to install, no ads, and no cost for schools.

ISTE NETS, National Education Technology Standards

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) is the premier membership association for educators and education leaders engaged in improving learning and teaching by advancing the effective use of technology in PK-12 and teacher education.

The NETS have served as a roadmap since 1998 for improved learning and teaching. They help measure proficiency and set goals for what students (NETS•S), teachers (NETS•T), and administrators (NETS•A) should know and be able to do with technology in education.

Moving Beyond One Size Fits All With Digital Citizenship

This article by middle school administrators Deb Socia, of the Lilla G. Frederick Middle School in the Boston area, and Matt Levinson, at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, Calif. talks about schools’ five stages of digital-learning adoption and the best ways to use digital tools to enhance teaching, learning, and students’ online safety. Thanks to Anne Collier's NetFamilyNews blog in pointing to this. Here’s her recent post on the global nature of digital citizenship.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills

This national  organization advocates for 21st century readiness for every student. As the United States continues to compete in a global  economy that demands innovation, P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help the U.S. education system keep up by fusing the three Rs and four Cs (critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity and innovation). See their curriculum maps for technology planning. See the Catalina Foothills District for 21 skills in action.

Practical Principals

Two principals collaborate to publish podcasts on their experiences supporting technology integration and other lessons.

Project Based Learning (Buck Institute)

In Project Based Learning (PBL), students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking). Find excellent resources for designing  a project and check out their Online Project Library.

TIM, Technology Integration Matrix

The Technology Integration Matrix (TIM) illustrates how teachers can use technology to enhance learning for K-12 students. The TIM incorporates five interdependent characteristics of meaningful learning environments: active, constructive, goal directed (i.e., reflective), authentic, and collaborative (Jonassen, Howland, Moore, & Marra, 2003).

Examples of School Action - Use Media to Reach Your Clients

http://www.37stars.org/ Matt Callison's (Presenter on Digital Learners) class blog and website.

Find inspirational ways to incorporate social media in your classroom with this list. Social media may have started out as a fun way to connect with friends, but it has evolved to become a powerful tool for education and business. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter and tools such as Skype are connecting students to learning opportunities in new and exciting ways.  (Thanks again, to Anne Collier for this link.)

See this video of a MN high school English class using Twitter in the classroom to engage to students. The curriculum comes from a program out of the University of MN called Dig Me, short for digital media. Teachers report higher student achievement.

If you are interested in starting a Facebook page for your class, see this article from Richard Byrne on how to do it. Richard uses blogs as the main media for his high school social studies classes, but he supplements that with Facebook groups so that students can easily get course related information.
