With their many hand-held devices, students are mobile, wireless and on-the-go. How do you support productive uses of student communication when it is outside of our local area networks? Situations have arisen ranging from cyberbullying to sexting to cheating in schools. Where does your school district stand on the issue of mobile technology use? How can you balance the benefits of mobile technology in learning with the controls needed to provide a safe environment? A legal expert will address these questions and provide guidance on the latest updates to California education code. 

 

Guest presenter will be attorney Jan Tomsky, the managing partner of Fagen, Friedman and Fulfrost's Oakland office.  She has an extensive practice with particular emphasis in special education and student matters, particularly those that involve complex or sensitive issues.

2. Digital Downsides - October 26, 2011  10:00 am - 11:00 am 

 

E-Rate and technology plan funding require your district to educate your students, parents and staff about appropriate online behavior.  Learn about the downsides of not addressing cyberbullying response and awareness. Could you pass an erate audit and show evidence that you have been educating staff and students on these issues? 3. Digital Educators: Training Staff on Awareness and Prevention Strategies - November 15, 2011  10:00 am - 11:00 am

 

What can administrators do to train their staff on Cyberbullying and Digital Citizenship? Your staff needs to understand the issues of bullying via electronic means, including social networks. They need to be able to identify students in crisis and support them. Do you have a plan in place? Are your staff trained to see the signs and implement a plan of action or intervention?  Do you have a system of documentation?  Who on your staff has been designated to implement this plan? This session is targeted at counselors as well as principals and teacher leaders at district and school sites.

4. Digital Communication:  Connecting with Parents and Community - December 6, 2011  10:00 am - 11:00 am

 

Parents are key partners in educating our students on digital citizenship. However, at times they feel like they are drowning in the digital stream in which their children are immersed. How can we support parents and make them partners in digital citizenship education? What do they need to know? Discover resources to share with your parent community.  Help them navigate and teach their children about the impact their digital footprint will have on them today, tomorrow and in their future.

5. Digital Natives:  Addressing Student Needs - January 10, 2012  10:00 am - 11:00 am

 

Our students are growing up in a digital world of social networking and texting. That does not necessarily mean they understand appropriate behavior, digital citizenship and consequences of poor choices. What do students need to know? Learn about great lessons and resources to use with students. Consider ideas to implement a campus-wide campaign on these issues.  Come away with many resources as well as a  survey to find out your students perceptions of these issues.

6. Digital Documentation - February 22, 2012  10:00 am - 11:00 am

        

Do you know when your Acceptable Use Policy was last updated? Does it include mobile technologies, web 2.0 tools, cyber ethics?  As Web tools and mobile devices become more prevalent, will your district bann these tools or find ways to leverage them in the curriculum?  Walk through resources to help you build, update or strengthen your current Acceptable Use Policy.  Learn how your site can develop a team of student experts or trustees to help guide their peers in the ethical use of mobile technologies.  Develop a system of support when infractions are witnessed.
